MPO to LC Duplex Breakout Cable Solutions

MPO breakout cables (also called fanout cables or harness cables) provide the critical connection between high-density MPO trunk infrastructure and standard LC duplex equipment ports. One end features a female MPO connector, the other end fans out to 4 or 6 LC duplex connectors depending on fiber count.

These cables are essential for 40G and 100G data center deployments where MPO trunk cables run between racks or floors, but equipment still uses traditional LC interfaces. The breakout design provides individual fiber pair access while maintaining the density advantages of MPO infrastructure.

Every MPO breakout cable features premium components: female MPO connector on one end, UPC-polished LC connectors in duplex configuration, color-coded furcation tubing for easy fiber identification, and flexible LSZH jacket. All cables factory tested with comprehensive documentation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Have questions about MPO breakout cables? We’ve compiled answers to the most common questions from our customers.

Trunk cables have MPO connectors on both ends and run between patch panels, cassettes, or equipment — they keep all fibers bundled together. Breakout cables (also called fanout or harness cables) have an MPO connector on one end and individual LC duplex connectors on the other end — they 'break out' or separate the fibers for connection to individual equipment ports. Think of trunk cables as the highway and breakout cables as the exit ramps to individual destinations. You typically need both: trunk cables for high-density backbone connections, and breakout cables to connect that infrastructure to your actual switches, servers, and storage devices.
Choose 8-fiber (4×LC duplex) if you're breaking out a 40GBASE-SR4 connection which uses 8 fibers, or if you want cleaner cable management with fewer legs. The 8-fiber option uses 8 of the 12 available fibers in the MPO connector. Choose 12-fiber (6×LC duplex) if you need to connect to 6 separate devices and want to utilize all 12 fibers in your MPO infrastructure. 12-fiber gives you maximum port density but results in more cable bulk with 6 legs. For most 40G breakout applications, 8-fiber is standard. For maximum device connectivity from a single MPO port, choose 12-fiber.
The individual legs of breakout cables follow TIA-598 color coding standards for easy identification and documentation. Standard colors in order are: Blue (fibers 1-2), Orange (fibers 3-4), Green (fibers 5-6), Brown (fibers 7-8), Slate/Gray (fibers 9-10), White (fibers 11-12). This color coding helps during installation and troubleshooting — you can quickly identify which leg goes to which device, document connections clearly, and trace fiber paths without confusion. The colors correspond to the fiber positions in the MPO connector, making it easy to maintain proper polarity and fiber mapping.
Absolutely! This is one of the most common applications. A typical deployment uses: MPO trunk cable connecting two MPO cassettes in different locations, then breakout cables on each end connecting the cassette to individual equipment ports with LC interfaces. For example, you might have a 12-fiber OM4 MPO trunk running between racks, plugging into MPO cassettes at each end, then using 12-fiber breakout cables to connect each cassette to 6 different switches or servers. Just ensure the cassette, trunk, and breakout cable all use compatible polarity (usually Type B).
To break out a 40GBASE-SR4 QSFP+ port to four 10GBASE-SR connections, use an 8-fiber OM3 or OM4 breakout cable (we recommend OM4 for better distance). The MPO end plugs directly into the QSFP+ transceiver, and each of the 4 LC duplex legs connects to a separate 10G SFP+ port. This gives you four independent 10G connections from one 40G port. Important: your switch must support 40G breakout mode — check your switch configuration. Use OM4 fiber for 150m reach at 40G or 400m at 10G. This is much more cost-effective than using four separate fiber runs.
Every breakout cable undergoes comprehensive factory testing. We test insertion loss and return loss for every fiber pair — all 4 duplex pairs for 8-fiber, all 6 duplex pairs for 12-fiber — at applicable wavelengths. Test results are documented in detailed reports showing: individual fiber pair performance, MPO connector performance, LC connector performance for each leg, overall pass/fail status against TIA/IEC standards, and cable serial numbers for traceability. We also verify proper fiber mapping from MPO positions to LC duplex pairs to ensure correct polarity. All test reports provided in PDF format with your order.
Yes! We manufacture custom breakout cables to meet specific requirements. Custom options include: any length from 0.5m to 30m+, mixed connector types (MPO to SC, MPO to ST, etc.), custom leg lengths (different length for each leg), custom jacket colors and labeling, 24-fiber configurations (MPO-24 to 12×LC duplex), specialty connectors (MPO/APC, LC/APC), armored or outdoor-rated jackets. We can also create hydra cables with MPO on one end splitting to multiple MPO connectors. Standard custom lead time is 2–3 weeks. Contact us with your specific requirements for a detailed quote.
All MPO breakout cables include manufacturer warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. Standard warranty period is 1–3 years depending on product. Warranty covers replacement of defective cables including connector performance (insertion loss, return loss), fiber integrity, furcation integrity, and jacket integrity. Warranty does not cover damage from improper installation, exceeding bend radius specifications (especially at the furcation point), connector contamination, or normal wear and tear from repeated mating cycles. Extended warranties available for critical deployments.
