FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Have questions about QSFP optical transceivers? We've compiled answers to the most common questions from our customers.

QSFP (Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable) comes in several variants for different speed requirements. The main types are: QSFP+ (40G) — the original QSFP for 40 Gigabit Ethernet applications; QSFP28 (100G) — evolved for 100 Gigabit Ethernet using 4 lanes at 25 Gbps each; QSFP56 (200G) — supporting 200 Gigabit Ethernet with 4 lanes at 50 Gbps; and QSFP-DD (400G) — Double Density design with 8 electrical lanes for 400 Gigabit applications. All QSFP variants share the same basic footprint and are backward compatible with QSFP+ cage designs, though higher-speed variants may require better thermal management. Our 400G and 800G transceivers use the latest QSFP-DD technology for maximum bandwidth density while maintaining industry-standard form factor compatibility.
Choose DR (Data Rate) single-mode transceivers when you need distances up to 500 meters, such as data center interconnect, building-to-building links, campus backbone networks, or metropolitan area connections. Single-mode provides longer reach but requires single-mode fiber. Choose SR (Short Reach) multimode transceivers for distances under 50 meters (OM4) or 30 meters (OM3), such as intra-rack connections, top-of-rack to spine switch links, or short-reach data center applications. Multimode uses less expensive OM3/OM4 fiber and lower-cost VCSEL transmitters. For most data center applications within a single building or rack row, SR models are more cost-effective. For inter-building or longer campus connections, DR models are necessary.
Yes! Our QSFP transceivers are fully compliant with IEEE 802.3 standards, QSFP MSA specifications, and CMIS management interface standards, ensuring compatibility with switches from all major vendors including Cisco, Arista, Juniper, Dell, HPE, Mellanox/NVIDIA, and Broadcom. The transceivers use standardized electrical interfaces (400GAUI-4, 400GAUI-8, etc.) and optical specifications (400GBASE-DR4/SR4, 800GBASE-DR8/SR8) that are vendor-neutral. We provide detailed compatibility information and can verify specific switch model compatibility before purchase. Our transceivers have been tested and deployed in multi-vendor environments successfully.
CMIS (Common Management Interface Specification) is the industry-standard management interface for high-speed optical modules including QSFP, QSFP-DD, and QSFP56. CMIS provides: comprehensive digital diagnostic monitoring including real-time optical power levels, temperature, voltage, and bias current for all channels; advanced module control including transmitter enable/disable, low power modes, and configuration management; standardized register map ensuring consistent management across different vendors and form factors; support for complex module features like forward error correction (FEC), loopback modes, and alarm/warning thresholds. CMIS replaces older SFF-8636 management interfaces with a more capable and feature-rich specification designed for 400G/800G applications. All our QSFP transceivers support CMIS 4.0 or 5.0 for comprehensive network monitoring and management.
QSFP transceivers use MPO-12 APC (angled polished connector) fiber optic cables. For DR models (400G DR4, 800G DR8): use single-mode OS2 (9/125μm) MPO-12 trunk cables with Type B polarity — these are the yellow-jacketed cables we offer in our MTP®/MPO trunk cable product line. For SR models (400G SR4, 800G SR8): use multimode OM3 (aqua) or OM4 (magenta) MPO-12 trunk cables with Type B polarity — OM4 is recommended for maximum distance (50m vs 30m). Both SR4 and SR8 models use dual MPO-12 connectors. The 400G SR4 uses channels 1–4 on one MPO connector (channels 5–8 unused), while 800G SR8 uses all channels on both MPO connectors. We can provide matching trunk cables and breakout cables to complete your connectivity solution — contact us for a complete cabling package.
Silicon Photonics is an advanced optical technology that integrates photonic components (lasers, modulators, photodetectors, waveguides) onto silicon chips using semiconductor manufacturing processes. For the 800G DR8 transceiver, Silicon Photonics PICs (Photonic Integrated Circuits) provide: high integration density allowing 8 transmit and 8 receive channels in a compact package, superior performance with consistent optical characteristics across all channels, efficient power management despite the high data rate (under 16W for 800 Gbps), lower manufacturing costs at volume compared to discrete optical components, and proven reliability from mature semiconductor fabrication processes. Silicon Photonics enables the 800G DR8 to achieve 500 meter reach on standard single-mode fiber with excellent optical performance — a critical advancement for next-generation data centers.
Yes! The 800G SR8 (also designated as 2×400G VR4) is a flexible transceiver that can operate in multiple configurations. It can function as: 2×400 Gigabit Ethernet (2×400GbE) — two independent 400G channels, ideal for switches with dual 400G ports; 8×100 Gigabit Ethernet (8×100GbE) — eight independent 100G channels when used with appropriate breakout cables and switch port configuration; or full 800 Gigabit operation as a single 800G interface. The module features 8 independent electrical lanes and dual MPO-12 APC connectors, providing maximum flexibility for different deployment scenarios. Configuration is typically managed through the host switch — consult your switch documentation for supported breakout modes and configuration procedures.
All QSFP optical transceivers include comprehensive manufacturer warranty coverage. Standard warranty period is typically 3–5 years depending on the specific model. Warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship including: optical performance (power levels, wavelength accuracy), electrical interface compliance, CMIS management interface functionality, and mechanical integrity. Warranty does not cover damage from improper installation, operation outside specified environmental conditions, electrical overstress, or connector contamination. We provide technical support for installation, configuration, and troubleshooting. Each transceiver includes detailed specification sheets, compliance documentation, and test reports. Extended warranties and premium support packages are available for mission-critical applications.
